Abstraction through simplified geometric forms inspired by African sculpture marks a turning point in early modern sculpture. Constantin Brancusi embraced reducing forms to their essential shapes, favoring smooth, unified silhouettes over detailed realism. The Kiss, created in the early 20th century, embodies this approach by distilling the embracing figures into interlocking, rounded volumes with minimal surface detail. The result is a sense of unity and essence rather than a literal likeness, and the geometric simplicity echoes African art’s stylized, monumental look.

This combination of pared-down form and spiritual or emotional clarity is what makes Brancusi the best match for a piece described as African-inspired and geometric. Rodin, by contrast, is known for richly textured surfaces and expressive naturalism rather than geometric reduction. Calder comes later with entirely different kinds of abstraction and kinetic forms. Bearden is primarily recognized for other media and styles, not this early geometric sculpture.
